Advanced Stats Terms on the ACT® Math: Full Guide 2024
Read time: 2 minutes Last updated: September 23rd, 2024
Introduction
The ACT® Math Test has started to test on advanced stats terms more frequently. They don't show up every test, but most students have seen these questions in practice tests. Use your discretion to decide how much time to dedicate to this topic.
I'd only recommend spending time on this if you've consistently scored over a 21 on the Math. It is an important topic but it doesn't come up every single test.
Key Advanced Stats Terms
1. Sample
A sample is a part of your whole population. A population can be any group that you are trying to study for whatever purpose. A sample is a part of that population group.
Now, let's look at a concept that involves the entire population rather than just a sample.
2. Census
A census occurs when you tally every single member of a given population. The Census happens in the United States every 10 years. The Census counts every single person in the population of the United States and asks them certain questions.
While a census provides comprehensive data, sometimes we need to gather specific information from a population. This brings us to the next term.
3. Survey
A survey refers to asking questions. How do you feel about x, y, z? This is opposed to finding quantitative or empirical data about a given population.
When conducting surveys or selecting samples, it's important to understand the final term.
4. Randomized
In stats, randomized means that any given member of the population is equally likely to be chosen.
Understanding these terms will help you tackle advanced statistics questions on the ACT® Math Test with confidence.
